What are Whiteheads?

Whiteheads are small bumps that appear on the skin and they are formed when oil or sebum on the skin are clogged under skin pores. Whiteheads are formed as a result of excessive production of sebum which is common when there are hormonal changes like during pregnancy and puberty. As the oil builds up, it mixes with dead skin cells and dirt to form whiteheads which are usually white or yellowish in colour. Whiteheads are formed under the skin and are not open to oxygen unlike blackheads whose colour is as a result of oxidation. Whiteheads are common in some parts of the body more than others, these parts include nose, chin and cheekbone and they occur among both men and women alike. Whiteheads are known to the medical community as closed comedones and are common occurrence among people with oily skin. Whiteheads are similar to acne; some people even characterize them as a type of acne. However, they are usually painless and this is the basic differing factor.

Prevention of Whiteheads

The best way to handle whiteheads is to avoid it in the first instance. There are many safety precautions and lifestyle habits that can make this possible. These preventive measures will guarantee you a whitehead-free life;

Maintain a Clean Face Always: this is an absolute necessity if you must be whiteheads free. Wash your face at least two times every day in the mornings and evenings. Never sleep with your makeup on overnight. Use facial cleansers to wipe away dirt, il and makeup from the face. After washing your face, use clean towel to pat-dry it. Never rub your face to dry it as this may be harsh against your skin.

Maintain an overall body hygiene: It is not your face that is susceptible to whiteheads and for that reason; you should wear clean clothes always. Also, wear loose clothing that will allow fresh air to your skin and less of snug and fitted clothes that will close up your skin pores.

Exfoliate regularly: since whiteheads are multiplied by the clogging of pores by dead skin cells, oil and dirt, you need to exfoliate regularly, at least, once a week. Use facial scrub on your face. For more effective exfoliation, steam or warm your face before exfoliating to open up the pores.

Moisturize: some people think because oil is part of what multiplies whiteheads, they don?t need to moisturize but this thinking is fallacious. After washing your body and exfoliating, your skin is sure to be dry and this is unhealthy for the skin. Dryness of skin also makes it vulnerable to whiteheads, so, you shouldn?t leave your skin dry in any condition. For safety, use oil-free moisturizer that contains salicylic acid.

Abstain from oil-based skin products: oil based skin care products can make the skin susceptible to whiteheads so instead, use water based skin care products like moisturizers, cleansers, make up and others. Oil based beauty products worsen and cause whiteheads by causing build up of oils that clog skin pores.
